Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 9-inch pie dish
  • 1 knife
  • 1 Cutting Board
  • 1 spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust pre-made or homemade
  • 5 ounces instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups whole milk cold
  • 1 cup whipped cream or Cool Whip thawed
  • 2 medium bananas

Optional garnish: additional whipped cream, sliced bananas, mini chocolate chips, or chocolate shavings

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pie Crust: If using a store-bought pie crust that requires baking, preheat your oven according to the package instructions.
Place the crust in a 9-inch pie dish and bake until it is lightly golden and firm, usually around 8–10 minutes.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack.
If you are using a pre-made graham cracker or frozen crust that doesn’t require baking, simply remove it from packaging and set aside.
Ensuring the crust is fully cooled is key to keeping the pudding filling from melting or becoming watery.
  • Whisk the Chocolate Pudding: In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant chocolate pudding mix with 2 cups of cold whole milk.
Using a whisk, mix rapidly for 2–3 minutes. Whisk continuously until the mixture thickens to a custard-like consistency—when you lift the whisk, the pudding should coat the whisk without falling off.
This step ensures a smooth, creamy base that will hold the banana slices evenly.
  • Fold in Whipped Cream: Once the pudding has thickened, gently fold in 1 cup of whipped cream or Cool Whip.
Use a spatula to fold slowly and evenly, preserving the light, airy texture.
Folding instead of stirring vigorously helps maintain a fluffy consistency that will contrast beautifully with the dense chocolate layer.
  • Add Bananas to the Filling: Slice one of the bananas into thin, even rounds.
Gently fold the banana slices into the chocolate pudding mixture, distributing them throughout without crushing.
The banana slices add a natural sweetness and creamy texture that balances the richness of the chocolate.
  • Assemble the Pie Base Layer: Pour the chocolate pudding and banana mixture evenly into the prepared pie crust.
Use a spatula to spread the filling smoothly and press lightly so that the filling reaches all edges.
Smooth the top to create an even base layer, which will help the whipped cream layer sit neatly on top later.
  • Chill the Pie: Cover the pie with plastic wrap or a pie cover and place it in the refrigerator for at least 2–3 hours.
Chilling allows the pudding to set fully, making slicing cleaner and ensuring the flavors meld beautifully.
Patience here is essential for achieving the perfect creamy consistency.
  • Prepare the Topping Bananas: Slice the remaining banana into thin, uniform rounds.
These will be used to top the pie, creating an attractive presentation and an additional layer of fresh fruit flavor.
  • Add Whipped Cream Topping: Once the pie has chilled and set, remove it from the refrigerator.
Spread the remaining 1 cup of whipped cream evenly over the top of the chocolate pudding layer.
Use a spatula to create a smooth, inviting surface or gentle peaks for a more decorative look.
  • Decorate the Pie: Arrange the sliced bananas over the whipped cream layer, fanning them out or layering them neatly.
Optionally, sprinkle mini chocolate chips or chocolate shavings over the top for extra visual appeal and a touch of indulgence.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Slice the pie into 8 equal portions using a sharp knife. Serve chilled for the best texture and flavor.
Each bite combines a crisp crust, creamy chocolate pudding, tender banana slices, and fluffy whipped cream—a harmonious mix of flavors and textures that delights every palate.
Encourage your guests to enjoy it immediately, but any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for the pudding to ensure it thickens properly; skim or plant-based milk may result in a runny consistency.
  • Homemade whipped cream can elevate the flavor and texture; simply whip heavy cream with sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  • Both store-bought and homemade crusts work well; graham cracker or traditional pastry crusts offer different textures and flavors.
  • Slice bananas evenly to ensure uniform layers and a neat presentation.
  • Chill the pie adequately for at least 2 hours to allow the pudding to set fully.
  • Garnishes like chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips add visual appeal and extra flavor.
